I thought this was a fairly entertaining coming of age story. The script was intelligent, if a little cliched now and then, and the acting good, especially the portrayal of AJ’s mother.
I will say that I got tired of the woe is me attitude of AJ, but perhaps I am just biased. I had a brother and my father die while I was still a teenager and managed not to get whiny, morose, or hate the world and everything in it. But I guess for there to be character growth in this sort of movie, you need to leave a lot of room for her to grow.
I also thought the songs selected for the film were especially poor and didn’t suit the mood at all. But perhaps these were the favorite groups of the movie’s target audience.
